30 Rock Season 4 Episode 17: Lee Marvin vs. Derek Jeter

Liz signs up for singles activities begrugingly in order to meet the man of her dreams. Jenna offers to join Liz at the singles activities. Jenna suggests Liz get less aggressive playing dodgeball after she bounces the ball off of a guy she is interested in. Jack has plans with Avery to go to a party that night. Jack’s plans are blown when Nancy arrives unexpectedly to visit Jack. Nancy is divorced from her husband and ready to start a relationship with Jack, asking if she can take him out for his birthday the same night that the party is scheduled. Jack tells Nancy he has an event he has to attend but will meet her at her hotel room for drinks afterwards. When Jack asks Liz who she’d rather date, Lee Marvin or Derek Jeter, Liz tells Jack Lee Marvin of course. Liz tells Jack he has to decide between Avery and Nancy but Jack thinks he can juggle the relationships until he decides who he should be with.

Toofer finds out the only reason he was hired at TGS is because of affirmative action. Liz admits Toofer was hired for a diversity quota and Toofer decides to quit. Jack meets Nancy at the hotel, Nancy is so tired from sightseeing she asks Jack if they can have a raincheck in the romance department and instead hang out watching movies and drinking beer. Jack gets cosy with Nancy until Avery calls telling him he has to meet her at Derek Jeter’s after-party. Jack makes up an excuse, leaving Nancy at the hotel and heads to back to Avery. Jack and Avery have dinner the next night for Jack’s birthday and their age difference comes up in their relationship. Avery gives Jack his birthday present, the cufflinks that Ronald Reagan wore when he was buried. Jack is touched and amazed Avery could get Reagan’s cufflinks. Nancy meets with Jack and gives him his birthday gift, a box of salt water taffy in their favorite flavor which touches him, reminding him of their days together in Boston.

Jack talks Liz into taking Nancy to one of her singles activities so he can go on a date with Avery. Liz and Nancy hit it off and Nancy chats up a guy who seems to be Liz’ type. Unfortunately Liz opens her mouth and the pessimism and sarcasm begins. As the single guy walks away, Nancy tells Liz she needs to loosen up with guys. Liz takes Nancy’s advice, the next time she attends the singles dodgeball event she walks up to the cute guy she is interested in and spills her guts, telling him what she wants in a guy. Liz is startled when she realizes the cute guy doesn’t speak English.

At the office Liz goes off on a tangent that nobody should receive special treatment based on their sex or race. Pete finds her personnel file and tells Liz she has received special treatment many times because she is a woman, revealing the only reason Liz’s show TGS was picked up was because NBC also picked up a show called “Bitch Hunter.” Liz confirms this with Jack who admits Liz was only hired because of affirmative action. Liz calls Toofer, offering his job back to him. Nancy arrives at Jack’s office to tell him she is heading back to Boston, but wants to come back in a few weeks to start their relationship. Jack pauses then says yes as Liz motions for Jack to tell Nancy the truth. As Jack and Nancy embrace, Jack sees Avery on TV and feels even more torn about the two ladies in his life.
