Breaking Bad Season 3 Episode 12: Half Measures

The show opens with Wendy turning tricks near the spot Combo was killed. Wendy does blow jobs for cash near the “Crystal Palace” motel, exchanging the cash and and burgers for a cheaper deal on meth from the drug dealers, the same ones who arranged to have Combo killed by Andrea’s little brother Tomas. Jesse sits in his car nearby, watching the drug dealers operate.

Walt rides with Walt Jr. as he practices in Walt’s Aztek for his upcoming driving test. Walt Jr. asks Walt if he can use the Aztek to take his test and Walt agrees. When Walt Jr. gets out of the car at home, Skyler comes out to talk with Walt regarding the conversation they had about the car wash. Walt is still against Skyler getting involved as the trusted bookkeeper of the car wash. Skyler tells Walt the fact that she is a bookkeeper is a believable story to launder money through buying the car wash business. Walt agrees only if he gets to “pretend” they have reconciled and has dinner at home five nights a week. Skyler and Walt barter for the number of nights Walt can be with the family and finally reach an agreement.

Jesse asks Walt to meet him after work for a beer. When Walt turns Jesse down, Jesse insists, indicating their conversation is being recorded in the lab. Walt meets Jesse for a beer and after a long silence asks Jesse what he wants from him. Jesse pulls out a pack of blue meth and asks Walt if it is their meth. Walt panics that Jesse stupidly pulls out the meth and covers up the bag quickly. Walt checks the bag and tells Jesse yes it is their meth. Jesse tells Walt about the drug dealers and how they used his girlfriend’s little brother to kill Combo. Jesse thinks using little kids to kill is wrong and he wants revenge for Combo’s death. Jesse asks Walt to help him get poison in order to kill the two drug dealers but Walt advises Jesse against it. Walt knows the dealers are selling drugs from Gus’ pipeline and it would be dangerous for Jesse to take revenge on them. Jesse gets up from the table and vows he will take his own revenge without Walt’s help.

Marie, Walt Jr. and Hank play cards, betting on the winner. Marie tells Walt Jr. Hank can go home but Hank downplays the subject telling Marie he will only go home when he can walk out of the hospital. Walt Jr. calls Hank on this, asking if he thinks because he uses crutches to walk he should be in the hospital too. Hank cannot be convinced so Walt Jr. leaves the hospital room. Marie starts bantering with Hank as she gives him a sponge bath, telling him everything is ready for him at home, and trying to convince him he is every bit the same man she married. When Hank gets angry that Marie keeps bringing up going home, Marie bets Hank she can give him a hand job that works and if she succeeds he will come home with her. Hank is flustered but tells Marie there is no way anything will happen. Marie proceeds to give Hank a hand job under the covers and Hank sits in bed, certain nothing will happen, until he suddenly gets a surprised look on his face. Next we see a nurse wheeling Hank out of the hospital while Marie smiles and walks beside them.

Walt and Saul wait in the law office for Jesse, who doesn’t show. Walt confides in Saul that Jesse is planning to kill the drug dealers. Saul suggests eliminating Jesse might not be a bad plan, he’s trouble and they both have a good deal set-up with Gus. Walt asks Saul if there is any way he can have Jesse arrested and put away at a low-key prison for a month until Jesse cools off for his own sake. Saul starts to make plans to have Jesse arrested.

Jesse hires Wendy to take poisoned burgers to the drug dealers. Wendy is afraid to get involved but Jesse convinces her to do it. Jesse drives Wendy to the drug dealers spot and wonders where they are. Mike drives up with Victor, the supervisor from the lab, and Mike tells Jesse to get out of the car. Mike takes Jesse to the factory farm where Gus and Walt are waiting for him. Gus brings in the drug dealers and explains to Jesse they are his employees. Gus tells Jesse he has one friend in the room, Walt, and it is only because of his respect for Walt that the situation has not been dealt with in another way. Gus insists Jesse and the drug dealers make peace and shake hands. Eventually Jesse agrees once Gus tells the drug dealers not to use children in their hits. Walt drives Jesse back to his car, telling him “Your actions, they affect other people, sometimes compromises have to be made.” When they arrive back at Jesse’s car he storms out of Walt car, angry and feeling betrayed.

Walt gets an unexpected visit from Mike, Gus’ hired assassin, at Skyler’s house. Mike knows Skyler and the rest of the family are not home and invites himself in. Mike tells Walt they both work for Gus, which is news to Walt. Mike warns Walt not to let Jesse go forward with his plan to kill the drug dealers or for Jesse to end up in jail, Gus would not like either senario. Mike tells Walt a story about his time as a beat cop and the wife beater they regularly arrested for beating his wife. Mike tells Walt he had the chance to kill the wife beater but gave him another chance, and two weeks later the man beat his wife to death. Mike says he never made that mistake again, telling him “No more half measures, Walter,” referring to Jesse.

Andrea and Jesse are in bed when she receives a phone call from her grandmother, telling her Tomas has been killed. Andrea and Jesse arrive to find Tomas covered with a sheet and police tape surrounding the scene. It is obvious to Jesse Tomas was killed by the drug dealers to silence him. The next day at the lab, Walt calls Jesse numerous times, only reaching his voicemail. That evening at dinner with Skyler and Walt Jr., Walt uses the bathroom and tries to call Jesse again. Walt sees on the news during dinner that a young boy has been killed and recognizes Tomas’s name from his conversation with Jesse. Walt makes an excuse about dinner and rushes out of Skyler’s house.

Jesse pulls up to the drug dealers area and snorts some blue meth before stepping out of the car with his loaded gun in hand. The two drug dealers step out of their car and start to move towards him. As the three men get within shooting distance of each other and cock their guns Walt’s Aztek runs into the two dealers, crushing one under his car and killing him instantly while crippling the other. Jesse stands stunned as Walt walks over to the dealer on the ground who tries reaching for his gun. Walt shoots the dealer in the head, killing him, and gives Jesse one instruction: Run!
