Screen Actors Guild Award Winners 2012

The SAG awards are almost always an interesting show due to the fact that the Screen Actors Guild members choose the winners of the awards. The peer to peer awards appear to be genuinely appreciated by the acting community. Many of the top nominated movies were well represented in the SAG nominations and wins, while some perennial favorite TV shows won again. The movie The Help did very well in SAG award wins, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. Betty White continues to be on a roll in her already award filled career, winning Best Female Actor in a comedy series. Some of the SAG film wins were different from the Golden Globes film winners, it’s always good to see the award wealth being distributed among so many worthy actors.

30 Rock Season 6 Episode 1 Recap: Dance Like Nobody’s Watching

In 30 Rock’s Season 6 episode Liz is walking, no practically dancing her way to 30 Rock and meets up with Jack. He can’t get over how cheery Liz is acting, not herself at all. Jack goes on about how predictable Lemon’s Christmas holiday must have been. Liz keeps smiling and Jack admits he is confused by her uncharacteristic perkiness.

At TGS Liz runs into Kenneth who tells Liz and Pete he is prepared for the Rapture that is happening the next day. Kenneth is ready to give away his earthly goods and shows Pete his bucket list to complete. Pete looks at the bucket list and derides Kenneth on his need to finish odd-jobs at TGS instead of doing something he’s never done, like going to the ocean.

Liz meets up with Tracy in the hallway. Tracy is ready to ruin TGS because he is very jealous of Jenna, who has a prime judge job on the new hit America’s Kidz Got Singing! Tracy threatens Liz who tells him to go ahead with his plans, she’s staying out of the drama. Tracy doesn’t know how to take this happy-go-lucky version of Liz.

AMC’s Hell On Wheels

A former Confederate soldier seeks revenge for his wife’s death, determined to hunt down the men who killed her. Cullen Bohannon follows the trail of the murderers to the town of Hell on Wheels, a lawless, corrupt place inhabited by immigrants, outlaws, emancipated slaves, and lost souls. The town services the Union Pacific Railroad’s West construction of the first transcontinental railroad which is overseen by ‘Doc’ Durant.

AMC has produced another fine show with Hell On Wheels. This gritty post-Civil War Western set in the 1860′s has already been renewed for a second season. It is always good to see a realistic style Western that is done well and Hell On Wheels achieves this. The show covers wide-ranging themes of revenge, immigration, slavery, and the civilization of the West, making this show very watchable. The characters are interesting, and the cast is uniformly strong, with stand-out performances by Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, Colm Meaney as Thomas ‘Doc’ Durant, Dominique McElligott as Lily Bell, and Christopher Heyerdahl as The Swede. Common also gives a strong performance as freed slave Elam Ferguson.

Catch the final season one episodes of Hell on Wheels on AMC Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. Check your local TV listings for more information.

69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Nominations 2012

The 69th Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced yesterday. The Golden Globes are often thought of as a glimpse into the leading nominations for the Oscars. Ricky Gervais will host a third time which should keep the show lively during the broadcast. Meryl Streep received her 26th Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for The Iron Lady, as well as a nomination for Best Actress in the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, and no doubt may see a nomination for the same role come Oscar time. George Clooney is a triple threat this year with nominations for Best Actor in The Descendants, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay nods for The Ides of March.

New television shows and actors received some unexpected nominations pushing out long time nominees. Notably absent from the nomination list this year was Steve Carrell for Best Actor Comedy/Musical, Modern Family’s cast with the exception of Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara for comedy nominations, and Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall missing from the Best Actor Drama category. That’s a lot of high level talent to leave off the list for this year’s awards.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. EST/5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. PST on NBC. Check your local listings for more information.
