69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Nominations 2012

The 69th Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced yesterday. The Golden Globes are often thought of as a glimpse into the leading nominations for the Oscars. Ricky Gervais will host a third time which should keep the show lively during the broadcast. Meryl Streep received her 26th Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for The Iron Lady, as well as a nomination for Best Actress in the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, and no doubt may see a nomination for the same role come Oscar time. George Clooney is a triple threat this year with nominations for Best Actor in The Descendants, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay nods for The Ides of March.

New television shows and actors received some unexpected nominations pushing out long time nominees. Notably absent from the nomination list this year was Steve Carrell for Best Actor Comedy/Musical, Modern Family’s cast with the exception of Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara for comedy nominations, and Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall missing from the Best Actor Drama category. That’s a lot of high level talent to leave off the list for this year’s awards.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. EST/5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. PST on NBC. Check your local listings for more information.

Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations 2012

Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced yesterday. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are the only awards show honoring movies and television with nominations by fellow actors, which makes this award an important one to receive. The movies The Descendants, Moneyball, and The Help have been movies the media speculated about for nominations during awards season and they did not disappoint, receiving a number of Guild nominations. It was great to see Melissa McCarthy’s performance in the comedy Bridesmaids being represented with a nod for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role, and the entire cast being nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. Steve Carell was nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Comedy Series for his final season of The Office. No nominations for the many excellent performances in Community, Justified, or Sons Of Anarchy, which is unfortunate.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2012 on TNT and TBS shown live simultaneously at 8:00 P.M. ET/5:00 P.M. PST. Check your local listings for more information.

HBO Show News: Angry Boys

On January 1st, HBO will premiere Angry Boys, a new comedy series from Chris Lilley, creator and star of the acclaimed hit “Summer Heights High,” which debuted on HBO in 2008. Shot in mock documentary style, the show explores the lives, dreams and aspirations of males in present-day society, spotlighting six characters, all portrayed by Lilley, from a pair of 17-year-old twin boys in Australia to a 24-year-old Los Angeles-based rapper.

The series has already received widespread praise in Australia, with the Guardian calling ANGRY BOYS “beautifully observed, extraordinarily executed” and describing Lilley as “jaw-dropping.”  The Sydney Morning Herald acclaimed the show as “bold, aggressive, unafraid to trample on some very shaky ground.”

Entertainment Article: Frasier And Monk: Comparing Two Great TV Shows

The highest compliment I can pay to a television show is to lament its ending years after the series finale. Such is the case with “Frasier” and “Monk,” shows that ran respectively on NBC and the USA Network for several seasons. The lead characters, Frasier Crane and Adrian Monk, were two of the fussiest characters who I liked despite their idiosyncrasies. Though “Frasier” ended in 2004 and “Monk” in 2009, the terrific acting and exceptional writing keeps me a fan all these years later.

“Frasier” ran for 11 seasons and featured an ensemble cast that included Frasier, his brother Niles, their father Martin and his health care aide, Daphne. Notoriously fussy, Frasier and Niles spent the series trying to outdo each other with purchases of tailor-made clothing, expensive wine, and fine art, often belittling those who lacked their refined tastes. Frasier in particular was guilty of elitism, choosing to make Daphne use the washers in the community laundry room rather than reveal his beloved hat closet disguised a hookup for a washing machine. Frasier would’ve been an unlikable character had anything in his personal life ever gone quite right. He often started ventures with Niles that did not go well, including opening a restaurant that featured a kitchen explosion on opening night. Frasier dated rather fruitlessly during the series, unable to find or hold onto a girlfriend for longer than a few episodes. As high as he sat on his pedestal, plenty came along to humble Frasier and bring him back to earth.

“Monk” lasted for eight seasons and also featured an ensemble cast – Monk, a former detective; his assistant Sharona Fleming (and later, Natalie Teeger); Captain Leland Stottlemeyer; and Lieutenant Randy Disher. Monk’s peculiarities resulted from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which severely impacted his life yet helped him solve crimes. Monk suffered from a whopping 312 phobias, including germs, elevators, and milk, and was stingy with money, often having to be berated into covering his assistant’s business expenses. Like Frasier, Monk would have been wholly unlikable had he often not gotten his comeuppance. As a result of his OCD, he was often uncomfortable and sometimes unable to function, yet always able to see intricacies of an unsolved crime that others had missed. The one time he was able to live tic-free was when he was medicated, which resulted in a different kind of hard-to-handle life. Monk’s solving of a case that has haunted him during the run of the series showed the character finally headed towards a place of healing.

Frasier and Monk’s bumbling adventures resulted in funny and enjoyable episodes each week they were on. The crisp writing made Frasier’s grandiose (yet ill-fated) plans seem possible and Monk’s quirks endearing instead of irritating. Though stuffy and stingy, the characters’ humanity continues my love for each show years after they’ve left the air.

Man v. Food Nation Season 4 Episode 24: The Feast Special

This hour long special of Man v. Food Nation is all about Thanksgiving-style feasts and the preparation for this national holiday. Adam is traveling across the country to join in Thanksgiving feasts before heading to Big Earl’s BBQ in Scottsdale, Arizona for their Leg of the Beast Feast Challenge. Adam coaches three members each of the Scottsdale Police and Fire Departments for this undefeated challenge. The Police and Fire Department members must take down a 17-pound barbecue feast featuring roast pork and sides in 30 minutes to win the challenge.

Adam’s first stop is at Plymouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts to partake in a 17th Century-style Thanksgiving feast. The meal consists of turkey, stewed pompion (a stewed butternut squash), seething mussels, mashed potatoes and gravy, beets and stuffing. Adam proclaims the mussels some of the best he’s had, and calls this meal a “Delicous taste of history.”

Adam’s second feast stop is at Side Street Inn in Oahu, Hawaii for a Hawaiian feast, consisting of seared ahi tuna, boneless Kalbi short ribs, pan-fried island pork chops, meaty Hawaiian fried rice, and a steamed and fried local red snapper called Opakapaka. Adam tells the audience that unquestionably this is his favorite fried rice in the world.
