Community Season 2 Episode 1: Anthropology 101

Community’s season two premiere starts with the Greendale college study group meeting up after summer vacation. Everyone is getting out of bed and getting ready for school. We see each of the study group’s bedrooms seem to match their personality. We follow their morning routines: Troy is wearing Spiderman jammies, Jeff is hanging up side down from a bar doing exercises, and Pierce is waking up in his waterbed.

Everyone arrives at the study group room, where there are hugs all around. The study group proceeds to update each other on what they did over the summer. Jeff and Annie look around sheepishly as they try to quash news of their kiss after Britta’s confession of her love for Jeff at the end of school year dance. As the study group goes to the Anthropology class they are taking together this fall, they see Senor Chang as part of the class. Jeff asks Chang if he’s taking the class because he misses the study group and wants to join it, but Chang dismisses Jeff’s suggestion. The Anthropology teacher Professor Bauer (Guest star Betty White) begins the class talking about the most important tools man used and showing various ancient tools. When Starburns ignores Professor Bauer’s lecture, she picks up an ancient dart gun and blows a dart into Starburns sideburn, momentarily paralyzing him. The study group is stunned by the professor’s attack and rethink zoning out in her class.

Britta is trying to ignore the watchful eyes of women on campus, feeling humiliated that she bared her soul to Jeff publically. Suddenly women are coming up and congratulating Britta on her honesty, telling her she’s the coolest; meanwhile because Jeff rejected Britta he has become the most hated person on campus, even the lunch lady in the cafeteria won’t serve him. After talking with Annie, Jeff realizes if he professes his undying love to Britta he can convince the campus he is the cooler than Britta. When Jeff tells Britta he loves her, Britta sees the game Jeff is playing and professes her love for Jeff. Neither Jeff nor Britta are willing to back down, kissing madly and acting like the happiest couple in the world, all while playing a power struggle. Annie watches and is broken hearted over Jeff choosing Britta over her.

Abed has decided since Jeff and Britta are so committed to each other they should propose, to one-up Britta Jeff proposes to her and she says yes. Suddenly Abed tells them he is filming their nuptials for his “wedding episode”, forcing a grim look from both Jeff and Britta.

The study group starts bickering as Shirley reveals Jeff and Britta slept with each other after the paintball war; Annie is angry Jeff slept with Britta then kissed her soon after, and smacks Jeff across the face; Jeff bleeds from his nose and starts berating Abed for trying to make a movie out of his life; Shirley is upset that Jeff kissed Annie; Pierce is angry with Troy for tweeting what he says a la “Sh*t My Dad Says”; Britta is ticked with Annie for kissing Jeff after her love confession; and Jeff is upset with Britta for professing her love in front of the entire campus.

In Anthropology class Professor Bauer calls on the students to present their assignments on the the most important tool for survival. Jeff presents his assignment by telling the class that without respect you are nothing and he respects his study group friends. Professor Bauer thanks Jeff for his presentation and tells him he is wrong, pulling out a multi-tool she built out of ancient tools that looks like a torture device. Professor Bauer hooks Jeff over the neck with a noose and pushes him to the floor, explaining her torture device is the tool you need to survive. After Professor Bauer is suspended from her job for injuring Jeff, the study group stands around Jeff’s hospital bed as he recovers. Chang stops by and finally admits he wants to join the study group. Jeff tells the gang Chang is harmless and should join the group. Next we see Chang talking in two personalities, one good and one evil, railing about the study group table Jeff and Britta had sex on, and deciding if revenge needs to be taken on the study group if he is rejected. The episode ends with Abed, Troy and Professor Bauer sitting on the study room couch performing one of Abed and Troy’s goofy raps on the topic of Anthropology.
