Community Season 3 Episode 10 Recap: Regional Holiday Music
In Community’s Christmas episode spoofing the show Glee, the study group is hanging with each other in the cafeteria enjoying the Christmas season when the Glee club members pile into the cafeteria, announce their all important annual Christmas pageant, then sing extremely peppy and cheery renditions of Christmas carols followed by what they think is smoking rap music. Dean Pelton is thrilled while the study group wants to gag listening to their elevator style music. Britta wonders why Jeff just sits there and smiles knowingly. Suddenly the Glee club is confronted by Chang and his minions who present them with a cease and desist order to stop the pageant. Jeff explains to the study group someone reported their use of artist’s unlicensed songs without permission. The study group nods approvingly at Jeff while the Glee club screams in horror as they have a group mental breakdown.
As the study group meets in their study room Dean Pelton shows up with choir director Cory Radison in tow. Dean Pelton knows the study group stepped in the last time the Glee club did not perform due to a fatal bus crash, and saved the day at the Christmas pageant. Dean Pelton and choir director Radison are there to convince the study group to step in once again so the Glee club can go to the regionals. Choir director Radison seems a little too cheery and intense, making the study group members uncomfortable at best as they insist they aren’t interested in performing.
As the study group leaves Abed hears some piano music and goes to see what is happening. Choir director Radison sits at the piano playing a mournful song and lamenting to Abed that all the scenery and decorations for the pageant will have to be taken down. Abed gets caught up in the song and dance number choir director Radison plays and agrees to be in the Christmas pageant. Abed arrives at the apartment and talks Troy into joining the pageant, much to Annie’s dismay.
The study group wonders why their study room has been changed then Abed and Troy appear singing an array of 50′s, 60′s and 70′s music that they know will rope in Pierce for the pageant. Pierce joins in the musical number as the rest of the study group runs out of the room. Abed and Troy perform an exciting musical number for Annie that leaves her so inspired she has no choice but to join in as well. Annie catches Jeff in the costume room for the pageant and does a Betty Boop style song, instantly becoming ditzy and sex crazed in her Christmas character and uses her sultry ways to bring Jeff into the pageant. Pierce finds Shirley and Britta trying to cope with the Glee takeover and brings in a children’s choir who grab Shirley’s heart and soul, making her part of the pageant. Jeff finds Britta in the hallway where Britta realizes Jeff has gone over to the dark side of the pageant world. Britta is taken in by Jeff’s enthusiam and perkiness and she too joins the pageant.
Choir director Radison meets with Abed, thanking him for convincing the study group to be part of the pageant. Abed notices choir director Radison seems possessed when talking about the Glee club and realizes choir director Radison wants the study group’s every waking hour spent in the Glee club. Abed explains to Radison he was only interested in helping the pageant out at Christmas time.
Choir director Radison sit with anticipation as the Christmas pageant begins.Abed switches places with Britta who was previously playing a mute tree. Abed tells Britta to sing with her heart and Britta proceeds to sing a horribly improved song totally off-key, forcing choir director Radison to jump up on the stage to stop the pageant. The study group realizes choir director Radison is seriously weird and strange when he half heartedly admits to causing the Glee club’s bus accident and runs out of the room.
Abed decides he’s had enough and goes home to watch Dr. Who in his jammies. Abed hears singing outside his apartment door. When he opens the door the rest of the study group is standing singing Christmas carols then tells Abed they decided they’d much rather hang around together for Christmas than be involved in the Christmas pageant after all.
