Man v. Food Nation Season 4 Episode 19: Cincinnati Ohio

Adam is traveling to Izzy’s restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio to mentor youth baseball coach Adam Turer as he takes on the 110 Reuben Challenge. Turer is back for a rematch and must face a 5 pound reuben sandwich, completing the 110 Reuben Challenge within 30 minutes. The 110 Reuben Challenge has only had 2 winning challengers in more than 50 attempts and Turer is eager for a second chance at the challenge.

Adam’s first food stop is at Tom + Chee restaurant where they are known for their grilled cheese sandwiches. Adam heads back to the kitchen where the chef puts together two delectable sandwiches for Adam to try. The chef creates a blueberry-blue cheese donut made of crumbled blue cheese, slathered in blueberry compote and nestled between two halves of a grilled donut. Next the chef creates the Armagoetta sandwich with goetta sausage, spicy Pepper Jack cheese, hot peppers, and fried onions all topped off with a sweet hot mustard. Adam can see why Tom + Chee is so popular as he dives into the delicious blueberry-blue cheese donut and Armagoetta sandwich.

Next Adam visits Camp Washington Chili parlor, famed for, of course, their chili. Adam watches in the kitchen as they make the Five Way: Cincinnati chili over spaghetti, topped with chopped white onions, and shredded Cheddar cheese. Adam enjoys the special Cincinnati chili and pasta dish, a comfort food if there ever was one.

Adam enters Izzy’s restaurant, ready to cheer for Turer for his rematch with the 110 Reuben Challenge. Adam visits the kitchen to watch as the chef puts together the massive reuben sandwich. The chef constructs the 5 pound sandwich using with 1.10 pounds of prime corned beef, layered with a giant potato pancake, topped with eight slices of Swiss cheese, three pints of sauerkraut, and doused with Thousand Island dressing, encased in a 2 1/2 pound loaf of rye bread.

Adam Turer starts the challenge as Adam Richman and the crowd cheer him on. Turer starts out strong managing to chomp down half of the sandwich within 15 minutes. Turer began to struggle at 20 minutes into the challenge, hitting the sandwich wall with 3 pounds of the sandwich completed. Turer used a bowl of soup to soften the bread as he ate, and Adam suggested Turer stretch and gave him a wet towel as he struggled with the enormous sandwich.

Turer managed to down 4 1/2 pounds of the reuben sandwich before time ran out. Turer hit a new personal best time for him in the challenge, which made his defeat a little easier to take. Adam announces that today, in the battle between man and food, food won. Adam acknowledges Turer and presents him with an official Man v. Food Nation title belt.
