Man v. Food Nation Season 4 Episode 23: Savannah Georgia

Adam arrives in Savannah, Georgia to help mentor twin brothers Jamal and Jamil Williams through the Voodoo Juice Challenge at Angel’s BBQ, a carriage house in Savannah’s historic district that was converted to a BBQ restaurant. Angel’s BBQ specializes in sauces, the Voodoo sauce combines four hot peppers to create an unearthly hot sauce that takes down challengers readily. The brothers must eat this firey sandwich in five minutes or less to win the challenge and an Angel’s BBQ t-shirt.

Adam’s first stop is at one of his favorite restaurants, Sweet Potatoes. Adam wants to taste their peach-glazed barbecue chicken and dig into their famed banana pudding. Adam visits the kitchen where the chef prepares a fryer chicken until perfectly cooked, then adds a peach-glazed barbecue sauce made of the trinity (onions, peppers, celery) and canned peaches. Adam tears into the bird and proclaims their barbecue chicken delicious, and their banana pudding as the best pudding he’s ever eaten.

Next Adam visits Tubby’s Tank House in a fishing community where locals arrive via boat. Tubby’s is a seafood shack serving up fresh seafood. Adam is interested in their famous Low Country Boil. Adam watches back in the kitchen as the chef adds Canadian snow crab legs, Atlantic white shrimp, smoked sausage, red potatoes, and corn on the cob in a large pot to boil in a savory seafood spice mix. Adam dives into a big bowl of the seafood boil and sighs over the freshness of the seafood, the savory sausage, and tasty veggies that make this one special seafood boil.

Adam meets up with twins Jamal and Jamil at Angel’s BBQ for the Voodoo Juice Challenge. Adam wants to see firsthand what kind of heat the guys are facing and heads to the kitchen where the deadly Voodoo Juice is made. The chef grills up one-pound of pulled pork for each sandwich. Next the chef creates the Voodoo sauce, combining garlic, vinegar, and Sourwood honey, with hot peppers: habanero, Chipepin pepper aka chile tepin, chile de árbol, and the infamous ghost chili. As if that wasn’t enough heat, the chef dusts the sandwich bun with with a mix of hot spices called Devil’s Dandruff. Adam knows the brothers will need plenty of milk to help tame this intense hot sauce in 5 minutes to complete the challenge.

Jamal and Jamil begin the Voodoo Juice Challenge with a cup of milk by their sides as Adam and the crowd cheers them on. With only 5 minutes to devour the pulled pork sandwich and searing sauce the brothers dove into the sandwich and started to feel the kick of the sauce after a few bites. The brothers struggled as they used the milk to calm the firey sauce but Jamal soon ran out of milk. Jamil was overcome by the heat of the sauce and called it quits, but not before he gave Jamal the rest of his milk to help him through the challenge. The brother’s strategy worked as Jamal went on to finish the sandwich just as the 5 minutes was up.

Jamal and Jamil celebrate as Adam gladly announces that today, in the battle between man and food, man won, proving the teamwork between the brothers pulled out a victory for them. Adam then presents brothers Jamal and Jamil with an official Man v. Food Nation title belt.
