Man v. Food Season 3 Episode 1: San Diego
In the first episode of Man vs Food, Season 3, Adam travels to San Diego, California, to the Broken Yolk restaurant. Here he will face the Broken Yolk Special challenge, a 6-lb. breakfast served on a 15-inch pizza pan, featuring a twelve egg omlet covered in chili and cheese, massive home fries and two huge biscuits in one hour. If Adam wins this challenge his name is inscribed on a plaque on the wall of fame, he wins a free t-shirt and the challenge meal is free.
First Adam visit Phil’s BBQ, known for their dinosaur sized ribs slathered in their secret sauce, BBQ pork and their tri-tip sandwich. Adam tries their El Toro tri-tip sandwich, the meat covered in a dry rub and wet marinade, cooked till falling apart, then placed in a kaiser roll and covered with their special sauce. Adam takes a bite of the sandwich and exclaims to the camera “One of the best sandwiches I’ve eaten anywhere”.
The next stop for Adam is Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop, a Mexican-wrestling-themed shop that specializes in the Surfin’ California Burrito, filled with carne asada, shrimp, shredded Jack cheese, pico-de-gallo, avocado, french fries and chipotle sauce, a wrapped dream of a meal. Adam bites into the mega burrito and smiles.
To prepare for the Broken Yolk Special, Adam has a dream sequence in which he is dressed as a Mexican wrestler, wrestling as a masked luchador in the ring and competing against two luchadors who represent the food challenge. Adam of course wins the wrestling match.
Adam arrives at Broken Yolk restaurant and the crowd cheers him on. Adam discovers only 400 out of 10,000 challengers have succeeded in finishing the meal. Adam gets advice from a regular at the restaurant who tells him to mix the food together to make it easier to get down. Adam follows their advice and begins his feast of the Broken Yolk Special challenge. Adam dives into the twelve yolk omlet stuffed with sauted onions and mushrooms, covered with chili and cheese, 1 1/2 pounds of hash browns and two giant biscuits. Adam has been defeated by a mondo egg dish before and finds the mix of the foods is an advantage. Two thirds of the way through the challenge Adam tells the viewers the food is cold, making it more difficult to eat. Adam requests guacamole to add to the food and starts with renewed energy, telling the viewers anything with guacamole is delicious!
The guacamole does the trick and at the 24 minute mark Adam has only a few bites left. At 29 minutes into the challenge Adam has two more bites as the crowd screams and chants for him. Adam finishes the final bite of eggy goodness at 32 minutes into the challenge and jumps up from the table victorious, stating this day in Man vs Food, man won!
