Man v. Food Season 3 Episode 8: Long Island

Adam returns to his home base of New York to Islip on Long Island to take on the Port Royal Grille & Pub’s Davy Jones Locker Challenge, a seven pound seafood platter that only one other competitor has defeated. Adam must finish the plate of seafood within an hour, if he wins the challenge he receives his meal for free and gets his photo on the wall of fame.

First Adam stops by Ciao Baby! in Massapequa Park for their famous Italian food. Ciao Baby! is known for their huge portions of Italian cuisine, including their enormous three pound rice balls. Adam is there to try their famed seven pound Nona’s Old World Meat Platter. Adam goes back to the kitchen to see how the chef puts this Italian feast together. The chef makes the baseball sized meatballs out of ground beef, then cooks them in wine as the San Marzano tomato sauce bubbles away for five hours. The chef builds Nona’s Old World Meat Platter with a bed of rigatoni pasta surrounded by the hot and sweet sausages, topped with softball-sized Ciao Baby meatballs, and covered in homemade San Marzano tomato sauce and melted Parmesan cheese. Adam joins the restaurant owner and his family to enjoy the platter. As Adam bites into the meatballs he comments on the depth of flavor, saying they are “Awesome, really terrific!”

Next stop is a sweet treat, Adam visits the International Delight Café in Bellmore, where they offer eighty different kinds of gelato flavors to their happy customers. Adam decides to try The World Sundae, a two and a half pound monstrous goblet filled with thirty scoops of gelato, three belgian waffles and layered with sweet toppings. Adam watches behind the counter as The World Sundae is built. Adam chooses his ten flavors of gelato, then crispy waffles are added to sop up melted gelato, topped by syrups of hot fudge, caramel and marshmallow, M & M’s, chocolate sprinkles and five dollops of whipped cream. Adam dives into the sweet sundae and says “It’s like biting into a giant melted ice cream!”

The Man vs Food challenge has arrived as Adam walks into Port Royal Pub & Grille to face the seven pound Davy Jones Locker Challenge. Adam steps back to the kitchen to watch the platter of seafood being built for the challenge. The chef boils four pounds of snow crab and mussels, then stuffs the flounder with crab, shrimp and scallops, and cooks the flounder in bacon fat. Next the chef cooks shrimp on skewers and fries clam strips. The snow crab, mussels, shrimp, clam strips and stuffed flounder are piled on the platter, along with sides of fresh veggies, salad and cole slaw. Adam looks at the gigantic seafood platter in awe.

Adam sits at his table as the crowd cheers him on. The restaurant owner starts the clock as Adam tackles the two pounds of snow crab first, cracking the shells and pulling out the delicate crab meat. After fifteen minutes the crab is history and Adam starts eating mussels, shrimp, teamed with salad and veggies, scarfing it up by twenty minutes into the challenge. Adam starts in on the clam strips and cole slaw, downing them quickly, and leaving twenty seven minutes left to attack the stuffed flounder. As Adam starts eating the stuffed flounder he says “It’s so dense”, realizing he should have eaten the flounder earlier on in the challenge. As the crowd cheers him on, Adam is feeling the effects of too much food but takes a big breath and starts devouring the fish. Adam charges on until he has the last bite on his fork and triumphantly eats it, finishing the Davy Jones Locker Challenge in forty eight minutes with twelve minutes to spare! Adam gets his meal free and his name on the wall of fame, only the second person ever to complete the Davy Jones Locker Challenge. Adam smiles, happy to be back on his home turf. Adam announces to the crowd that in this seafood challenge of Man vs Food, today man won!
