Emmy Nominations 2011

The Emmy nominations produced some surprises, snubs, and expected results. Friday Night Lights, a fan favorite show, and newcomer Game of Thrones were nominated for Best Drama Series, along with the usual drama nominees. Newcomer Justified made Best Drama, along with talented star Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood) as Best Actor in a Drama, and guest star Margo Martindale, who deserves to win an Emmy for her role as Mags on Justified. It was great to see the ever excellent Walton Goggins (The Shield) receive a well deserved nomination for his role as Boyd in Justified. Although I have not had a chance to watch Game of Thrones yet I was thrilled to see Peter Dinklage nominated for his work in that show. I was glad to see Kathy Bates from Harry’s Law grab a spot for Best Actress in a Drama, as well as Laura Linney for her fine work in The Big C. Louie C.K. was nominated for FX’s Louie, a surprise and a welcome one for this hilarious show and talented comic. The Modern Family parent ensemble were all nominated for their sterling work on this excellent comedy show.

Missing in nominations were the actors from Sons Of Anarchy, really a shame since this is one of the better shows out there. Treme has some excellent cast members, none of whom were represented here. There were no nominations for Community, again, one of the best comedy shows out there and a fine ensemble of comic actors. No nomination for Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation? That’s just crazy, he deserves it.

Oscar Academy Award Winners 2011

The Academy Awards program this year was not the most exciting Oscars I’ve seen over the years. The hosts did their best. Anne Hathaway was great while James Franco was maybe a little too laid back, however, I can’t imagine Franco being nominated as best actor and trying to be the host of the evening as well, it couldn’t have been easy to go through. The expected results for best actor, actress, supporting actor and actress came to be, all of them well deserved. The King’s Speech trumped The Social Network as best picture. There were some surprises with the film Inception winning four awards (why wasn’t there a nomination for directing for Nolan?), and Alice In Wonderland nabbing awards for Art Direction and Costume Design, both well deserved. I have to say the set design for the Oscars this year was probably one of my least favorite over the years, just didn’t work for me other than the star design on the stage floor.

Steve Buscemi won best actor for Boardwalk Empire, repeating his win from the Golden Globes. The cast of Boardwalk Empire pulled out a surprise win as Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, beating out the time tested casts of The Closer, Dexter, The Good Wife, and Mad Men.

Oscar Academy Award Nominations 2011

The 83rd Academy Awards will be televised by ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011. The awards ceremony will be held at the Kodak Theatre, in Los Angeles, California. Nominations include ten films same as last year, up from the original five films traditionally nominated. This opened up award opportunities for a number of films. The King’s Speech garnered 12 Nominations, including Best Picture, while True Grit received 10 nominations, edging out recent front runner The Social Network, and Inception, both receiving 8 nominations. Black Swan ended up with a total of 5 nominations, less than the movie received at previous award shows.

Noteworthy exclusions to the Oscar nominations included actors and actresses nominated by the Golden Globes and Screen Actor’s Guild: Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter; Robert Duvall, Get Low; Golden Globe Best Actor winner Paul Giamatti, Barney’s Version; Michael Douglas, Wall Street: Money Never Sleep’s; Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine; and Mila Kunis, Black Swan. Leaving out Julianne Moore as a Best Actress nominee makes no sense with her co-stars Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo nominated for The Kids Are All Right. Sometimes great actors make it look too easy, Moore deserved a nomination as much as Bening for her fine work in the film. Movies receiving notable nomination snubs included the film The Town, and Christopher Nolan as Best Director for Inception.

The 83rd Academy Awards are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on ABC, check your local listings for show times.

Golden Globe Winners 2011

The Golden Globes had a few surprise winners and a number of expected wins. The Globes host Ricky Gervais was shockingly funny, making some pointed remarks about Hollywood. As expected there were wins for The Social Network. Black Swan, and The Kids Are All Right. The surprise wins in motion picture categories were Paul Giamatti winning as Best Actor, Musical or Comedy for the film Barney’s Version, Melissa Leo winning as Best Supporting Actress for The Fighter, and for television, Steve Buscemi as Best Actor, Drama, for Boardwalk Empire and Katy Segal as Best Actress, Drama, for her role in Sons of Anarchy. It is always great to see the exceptional Paul Giamatti win an award for his fine work. Steve Buscemi, seriously, this actor should have won a number of Emmys and Oscars by now, glad to see him win. It was especially encouraging to see Katy Segal win, since Segal’s stellar work in Sons of Anarchy has been until now underappreciated by the award shows. Time to acknowledge the talented Sons of Anarchy cast and see some award nominations upcoming for Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam, among others.

Winners Of 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards 2010

Sunday’s 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, who brought some comic moments to the ceremony. Fallon’s Glee spoof with him dressed as Bruce Springsteen singing “Born To Run” guest starring the Glee cast, John Hamm (Mad Men), Tina Fey (30 Rock), and Joel McHale (Community) among others, was a funny bit that was a big hit with the audience. Fallon used the best tweets he received to introduce stars during the show. Fallon’s method of announcing categories was by playing original comedy songs on the guitar and singing them with various stars in the audience.

Eric Stonestreet started Modern Family’s wins by nabbing the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy. Modern Family provided an upset, winning best comedy over popular comedy series Glee and Thirty Rock. Edie Falco won Outstanding Actress In A Comedy for her role in Nurse Jackie. Jane Lynch won Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy for her role in Glee. Kyra Sedgwick, who has been nominated numerous times for lead actress in The Closer, finally won Outstanding Actress In A Drama for her work on the series.
