The Simpsons Season 21 Episode 19: The Squirt and the Whale
This Earth Day episode centers on Homer’s quest for cheap electricity and Lisa’s concern over a beached whale. Homer’s electric bill is sky high and he’s not going to take it anymore. Homer decides to look into a cheaper energy source at the Earth day event. Homer and the family decide on a wind turbine which works fine when the wind is blowing. When the wind is not blowing Lisa and Bart take turns turning the turbine so they can keep watching their favorite shows on TV. Homer becomes disillusioned with wind turbines, even more so when a huge storm hits the area, creating disaster throughout Springfield and beaching a whale in the process.
Lisa finds the beached whale and becomes attached to Bluella. Marge worries that Lisa is becoming too attached to the whale and realizes most beached whales don’t survive. Homer talks the whole town into turning out to help free the beached whale. After numerous attempts at saving Bluella, the town realizes they cannot help the whale. Lisa sits by Bluella keeping her company and falls asleep on the beach. When Lisa wakes up she finds that Bluella has died. Lisa is devastated at the loss of Bluella. Marge and Homer try to cheer Lisa up. The townspeople decide to blow up the remains of Bluella but mostly end up exploding whale blubber all over the themselves.
Lisa returns to the beach to remember Bluella and sees two whale calves in the ocean. As Lisa tries to wave and contact the whales she sees a group of sharks circle the whales. Lisa asks Homer to help her save the baby whales. Homer and Lisa ride out on a speedboat to scare away the sharks but Homer ends up in the ocean instead, and the sharks turn on Homer. As the sharks hone in on Homer, the whale calves father arrives and chases the sharks away. Homer and Lisa watch as the father whale and his calves swim off in the ocean to safety.
